For this week’s Thread-y Set GO Blog, I want to share with you about what I think is one of the most exciting, but often understated, holidays of the year… St. Patrick’s Day!  For a holiday that originated as a religious feast day for the Patron Saint of Ireland, it is best known today as an international festival celebrating Irish culture with parades, dancing, special foods, and a whole lot of green!!!

Locally, the festivities begin on Saturday with a couple of parades in Albany, another in Hoosick Falls and a road race in Green Island.

With all this fun to be had, one can only expect traffic delays and road closures in the area of the celebrations.  So here’s a heads up:

The “Runnin’ of the Green,” a 4-mile road race in Green Island, is expected to draw 700 runners. The race starts and finishes at the Legnard Curtin American Legion Post, 35 Cohoes Ave. Expect heavy traffic delays, detours and closings between 9 a.m. and noon Saturday, particularly near the intersections of Cohoes and Tibbits avenues.

The following roads are closed:

8 a.m. to noon: Cohoes Avenue between Bleecker and Tibbits avenues

9:30 to 11:30 a.m.: Tibbits Avenue at I-787

The North Albany Limerick Parade, from noon to 1 p.m., begins at North First Street west of North Pearl Street at the North Albany American Legion Post. The route heads to Emmett Street to Broadway to Wolfert Avenue in Menands then back on South Pearl Street to North First Street.

The following roads will be closed:

North First Street between Broadway and Van Rensselaer Avenue

North Pearl Street between Wolfert Avenue and Emmett Street

Broadway between Wolfert Avenue and Emmett Street

North Second Street and North Third Street, eastbound at Broadway and east- and westbound at North Pearl Street

Lawn Avenue, westbound at Broadway and east- and westbound at North Pearl Street

Bonheim Street and Lindbergh Avenue, eastbound at Broadway and east- and westbound at North Pearl Street

There are no special on-street parking restrictions.

The route for the Albany St. Patrick’s Day Parade, from 2 to 4 p.m., begins on Central Avenue at Quail Street, heads to Washington Avenue, State Street and ends on Pearl Street.

Road closures:

Noon: Central Avenue between Manning Boulevard and Quail Street

1 p.m.: all east and west traffic on the parade route. North and south cross traffic will be permitted.

1:30 p.m.: all traffic on parade route and all cross streets along the route as the parade progresses, including North and South Pearl Streets from Pine Street to Hudson Avenue.

Parking restrictions, 7 a.m. to 6 p.m.:

Central Avenue, north and south side of the street between Ontario Street and North Lake Avenue

Quail Street, east side from Central Avenue to Sherman Street

Washington Avenue, south side from Dove Street to South Swan Street (some of this parking will be available for parade time)

State Street, south side from Eagle Street to South Pearl Street

State Street, both north and south sides from Pearl Street to Broadway

Parking restriction, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.:

Eagle Street, east side from Corning Place to Pine Street

Broadway, both sides from Pine Street to Hudson Avenue

The Hoosick Falls parade and Irish Fest begins at 1 p.m. with the parade in Wood Park. The route head down Main Street, John Street, Church Street and Willard and before returning down Main Street.
